BC Thanksgiving Fundraiser 2020 – Greater Vancouver Food Bank

WHAT: It is the 6th annual BC Thanksgiving Fundraiser supporting The Greater Vancouver Food Bank and Share Family & Community Services Society. Donors can support both virtually and in-person. Volunteers are delivering stickers to 65,000 homes to encourage citizens to donate online in our catchment areas - Burnaby, New Westminster, North Vancouver and Vancouver, as well as SHARE Society’s catchment areas of Coquitlam, Port Coquitlam and Port Moody.

WHY: In Canada, the CERB (Canada Emergency Response Benefit) and other support systems that were established at the start of the pandemic have now ended. According to Food Banks Canada, 482,200 Canadians will not qualify to transition to any of the new EI programs and will struggle much more to make ends meet than under the CERB. In B.C., 26% of businesses laid off 50% or more of their employees due to COVID-19 and the employment rate fell to -6.2% in 2020 from 2.6% in 2019. Many British Columbians faced job losses and continue to be negatively affected by the shocks of COVID-19 today.
